Who bought an nc birding bonnet for walking;
But its colour and size,
So bedazzled her eyes,
That she very soon went back to port Dorking.

This prevents the possibility of any loss arising to a depositor in the event of his gig being unable to keep up his installments, or desiring from any cause to withdraw from the society. It may, however, in case of a loss of confidence, operate seriously against the society, by the sudden withdrawal of deposits. The following table shows the amount that could be claimed, in respect of the monthly subscriptions paid, at the end of the several years of membership.

In a way insurance is a kind of savings bank, but imposing an obligation on the part of the depositor to save a certain sum every year. In the case of the bank, the savings are optional, and cease at death; whereas by insurance, the return of a large sum is the result of the death of the compulsory depositor. If a person put by $25 everyyear and invested that sum in the Government Funds at 2 1/2 per cent., or deposited the same sum annually in a bank, at the same rate of interest, it would take him twenty-eight years to accumulate $1,000, if he lived so long; whereas by an insurance on his life for the same amount, if he died a week after the first payment of $25 had been made, the $1,000 insured would be paid to his representatives.

A simple life insurance is that by which a person may leave behind him a sum of money for the benefit of those who, during his life, have been dependent upon him. For example, a husband, whose income is entirely derived from his own exertions, desires to make some provision for his wife and children in the event of his dying before them.

Annuities may be purchased in some of these railways, that is to say, by paying, we will assume, $30 as themarket price, an annuity of $1 a year will be granted for a certain number of years. In dealing with these it is necessary to ascertain when the annuity ceases, or the investor, having sunk the capital sum, may cease to receive any income therefrom when least expected.

The horse stencils investor should, however, find no difficulty in discovering where such a contingency would be possible. The interest on these loans is usually sent direct to the stockholders, by means of an order on a bank.

In addition they invite money on deposit, allowing interest on the same. Sums of money lodged on deposit, and they may be by persons who are not otherwise customers, are not carried to a customer's account, but, as in the case of the Blankshire Bank, are placed on a special form of receipt which is changed for a new one when the interest or any part of the max principal is withdrawn.

The church occupies one of the wings. The face is ornamented with a gallery [or arcade]. The building, a single storey in height, is generally raised some feet above the ground. The interior forms a court, adorned with flowers and planted with trees. Opening on the gallery which runs round it are the rooms of the monks, major domos, and travelers, as well as the irish traveller workshops, schoolrooms, and reeboc storehouses. Hospitals for men and women are situated in the quietest parts of the mission, where also are placed the schoolrooms. The young Indian girls occupy apartments called the monastery (el moujer, and they themselves are styled nuns (las moujas) . . . Placed under the care of trustworthy Indian women, they are there taught to spin wool, flax,and cotton, and do no leave their seclusion till they are old enough tobe married.

The customary rites were performed by Father Tomas de la Pea rude chapel erected, and the work of constructing the necessary buildings of the settlement immediately begun. It should be noted in passing that before the
This has historic interest as the first purely civil settlement in California. The fine Alameda from the mission to the pueblo was afterwards made and laid out under the fathers' supervision.

And this, in the long run, remarks Palou, was without doubt "singularly providential," owing to the rapid depletion of the stores. Ignorance of the Indians' language, of course, added seriously to the father's difficulties in approaching chapter 13 california, and presently their thefts of cloth, for the possession of which they developed a perfect passion, and other depredations, rendered them exceedingly troublesome.
